After leading the West Liberty University volleyball program to the highest regional ranking in team history, Riley Schenk is looking to build on that success in her third season at the Hilltopper helm.
Schenk’s Hilltoppers came on strong down the stretch to post a 21-win season in 2021. The WLU volleyball team was ranked among the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Top 10 in all three weekly polls, rising as high as No. 9 in the final month of the regular season.
That No. 9 regional ranking tied the highest regional ranking in school history, dating back to the final regional ranking of the 2018 season. West Liberty came up one win shy of the school’s first-ever NCAA regional berth, falling to No. 1-ranked Wheeling in an MEC Tournament semifinal.
Four members of the WLU volleyball team received All-MEC recognition. Madison Clayton earned first-team honors for the third straight year while Nyia Setla was a second-team pick for the second time. Kirsten Bogunovich received honorable mention and Riley Cudnik made the All-Freshman Team.
Clayton made history as West Liberty’s first first-team All-Region and NCAA Division II All-American after leading the MEC and ranking among the Top 10 nationally with 148 blocks.
Schenk is certainly no stranger to success on the hilltop. She helped lead the West Liberty women to 41 wins in two seasons as a graduate assistant under former head coach Kayla Mull. That 2-year run was highlighted by a 24-10 record in 2018 which included the program’s first NCAA Division II regional ranking and a runner-up finish in the Mountain East Conference standings.
Before taking the head coaching reins at WLU, Schenk served briefly as lead assistant for the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at NCAA Division III Penn State-Behrend. The Lions’ men’s volleyball team was off to an 11-6 start when their season was halted by the pandemic in mid-March.
The Lorain, Ohio native enjoyed an impressive career at NCAA Division III Mount Union University in Alliance, Ohio. A 4-year starter, Schenk was a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference setter who earned OAC Player of the Week, first-team All-OAC and honorable mention AVCA All-Great Lakes Region laurels during a stellar senior season.
Schenk holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Business with a double minor in Business Administration and Psychology from Mount Union and earned her Master's of Education in Sports Leadership and Coaching from West Liberty. She resides in Wheeling, W.Va. with her fiance Joel Jarrett, who is a WLU alum and was a former Graduate Assistant Coach for the Hilltopper baseball team. Their wedding is scheduled for June of 2023.
